Monday, March 2 View Page
Thank you Steve Daletas! I have gotten one of my seeds for my lineup this year. I am extremely excited to grow the 1989! I had great luck with Steve’s 1928 so I think I will have great luck with the 1989 one as well :)

Monday, March 2 View Page
Had a fantastic time at the BIG SHOW! Vegas was a fantastic place to have this show! Really enjoyed talking to all the growers that I have talked to online. It was just a blast. Went to California yesterday after it ended and to Hoover dam. Very cool experience! The terrain is amazing with all the rocks. I’m ready for the 2020 season! BRING IT

Saturday, March 28 View Page
I’m back! Wow it’s been about a month since I last posted. The 2020 season has arrived! The compost is here. Time to get it into the patch

Saturday, March 28 View Page
Yesterday I got 7 yards or so into the patch. I ordered 8 yards. I am out of school until May 4th. Pretty crazy. Sucks to be a senior when this all happens. No prom, etc. Sucks

Headed to RI. Hmmm

She has been picked up! Bought a Troy bilt tiller for the pumpkin patch! Pretty nice one. Going to help a lot! Can’t wait to use it

Wednesday, April 1 View Page
Happy April 1st! Wow the season is coming fast. Starting seeds in 15 days! I gave the patch a till yesterday. Looks great. This tiller does an amazing job! I love it!

Wednesday, April 1 View Page
Ready to put the hoophouses up next week! Going to till one more time on Monday. Getting a rain nor’easter for the next two days so it will take some time for it to dry out

Saturday, April 4 View Page
I received my goodies today for the 2020 pumpkin season! Ron Wallace is da best. I also got some kelp and some potassium. Spreaded the kelp down on the patch. Potassium I’ll spread when the hoop houses come off. As you can see the kelp is pretty easy to spot lol. Starting seeds in 11 days!

Saturday, April 4 View Page
Figuring out where my hoops will go. Here’s where. Patch is pretty wet from the rain the last 3 days. My goal this upcoming week is to till on Tuesday if it’s dry enough then get the cables in Tuesday evening before rain Wednesday. Hopefully get the hoops up by Thursday and Friday. It’s go time. Seeds get started in 11 days

Saturday, April 4 View Page
Going to have much bigger plants this year than last. I’ll turn the secondary’s pretty quickly once they get out of the hoop and bring them all the way down to the woods. Each plant will have about 800 SF this year.

OFFICIAL 2020 GIANT PUMPKIN LINEUP! I have made some slight changes to my lineup! I’ll still be growing the 1989 Daletas but with that I’ll now be growing the 2051 Marshall as well. I really like the cross on that one. Excited to grow it. Thank you Steve Daletas and Dale Marshall for the seeds. I really appreciate it! So here it is 1- 1989 Daletas 2- 2051 Marshall — Starting seeds in 10 days!

Monday, April 6 View Page
Wow. That was a really tiring day for me. Lots of frustration today. I was putting the heating cables in the ground. Dug the first pit and everything went smooth. Then the second came. I was digging and I hit a rock. I dug deeper and the rock just kept going, I realized there was absolutely no way I’m getting it out. 500-600 pounds. I didn’t even get to the bottom of it. I covered it back up and decided to place my pit 5 feet in front of it. So I start digging and guess what I hit. Another massive rock. There was no way I was getting this thing out either. Now I’m really frustrated. Where am I going to put my second hoop house?! I decide to dig the pit on the other side of the patch. Then I am like “no i don’t like it here because the best soil is closest to the house” I then go and dig a pit a few feet behind the rocks and there are no rocks. Only 3.5-4 ft away from the fence but I I’d figure it’s the best option at this point. And there I have it. Soo much digging today! Too much, those rocks really threw me south. I am exhausted now.

Monday, April 6 View Page
Hello 2051 Marshall. She arrived in the mail today :). Thank you Dale! Can’t wait to grow these seeds. 9 days until they get started!

Wednesday, April 8 View Page
The hoops are up! Soil warming. 1 week until starting seeds. It’s go time!

Thursday, April 9 View Page
Almost time! Only 6 days away

Sunday, April 12 View Page
Well this should be fun!! Significant wind storm tomorrow and that comes with 1” of rain. 55-65 mph gusts for me. Better secure my hoop houses real good! Good chance the power goes out. Not looking good.

Sunday, April 12 View Page
Hopefully the hoops don’t blow away! Fingers crossed

Tuesday, April 14 View Page
The hoops got absolutely destroyed! Just kidding. They did really well in the 55-60 mph wind gusts yesterday. Patch is soaked from 2” of rain. Starting seeds tomorrow!

Wednesday, April 15 View Page
Seeds got started today! Woody started them. Will receive them back once they get the root to pop by Friday or so. Thanks Woody!

It’s official. I knew it was coming but a sad day. Senior year has officially ended. Well I’ve still got online learning but you know what I mean. My high school years are over. No graduation, no fun activities. Extremely sad on how it ended. I wish I could just walk the hallways one more time and see those faces. That won’t ever happen again. This sucks! Why did this have to happen on my senior year. Sad. :(

Tuesday, April 28 View Page
This was yesterday. Terrible weather!!

Tuesday, April 28 View Page
It’s gonna be a rough start. Temps in the 50s with lots of clouds at least until mid May. Maybe a few 60s this weekend. Definitely expecting a slow start.

Wednesday, April 29 View Page
Plants are looking pretty good! Not the best 1st true leaves but it doesn’t matter. Aiming to plant on Sunday!

1989 Daletas! It’s going to be a close call to see who gets to stay alive here.

Monday, May 4 View Page
Growing lights are on. No more warm weather. Gone for the next week or two.. that means low temps in the 30s and highs only in the 50s! Heater keeps the hoop about 10-15 degrees higher than outside temps. That means if it’s 35 out it’s about 45-50 in the hoop. Not the best in my opinion. I do want to keep the plants warmer. Tomorrow I’m going to put something over the plants to trap the heat in more. Whatever it takes!

Wednesday, May 6 View Page
Shown here is the 2051 Marshall. Big fan of it so far. Pretty aggressive out of the gate

Wednesday, May 6 View Page
The other 2051. A lot slower.

Wednesday, May 6 View Page
Last night I put a bin over the better growing 2051 and a blanket on top. Night temp dropped to 35 degrees while it was 64 where the plant was.

Wednesday, May 6 View Page
1989 Daletas. A bit on the yellow side but not doing to bad. I’m guessing the touch of yellow is from it still being a bit chilly at night even though they are covered

Wednesday, May 6 View Page
The other 1989. Overall I’m happy so far!

Friday, May 8 View Page
Starting the giant tomatoes Here’s my lineup 6.06 SCHMIT 4.01 BORGERS 5.71 DUNN 6.13 Zappa

Friday, May 8 View Page
Miserable day tomorrow so I’ve covered the hoops. 43 outside and 73 inside!

Friday, May 8 View Page
Heat stays in here very well with the blanket on top. Plants are liking it. Good insulation

Saturday, May 9 View Page
Did someone say snow? Got some big flakes this morning in Topsfield!

Saturday, May 9 View Page
Nice burst!

Saturday, May 9 View Page
The plants are nice and cozy in the hoops! Outside temp is 35 with a wind chill of 27. 65 in hoops

Tuesday, May 12 View Page
Pumpkin update! 2051 is doing great! This is the strongest plant out of the two and has always been more aggressive

Tuesday, May 12 View Page
Other 2051. Not bad at all. Both look great but can definitely see the more aggressive one. Will cull the one I’m thinking soon!

Tuesday, May 12 View Page
2051s

Wooo! The 2051 Marshall is starting to run now. Loving the plant so far!

Thursday, May 14 View Page
The other 2051

Saturday, May 16 View Page
Pumpkin update! The 2051s are just amazing plants so far. Extremely happy with them. I need to make a decision soon. The one on the left has always been the more aggressive one so I’m definitely leaning towards that one.

Saturday, May 16 View Page
Here’s the 1989. Not bad so far. The 2051 and 1989 just are completely different. Not in a bad way but the way they grow. 1989 has the node spacing a bit farther apart.

Saturday, May 16 View Page
Here’s the other 1989. Kinda being a pain. Vine wants to grow towards the side of the hoop. I’m definitely leaning towards the other 1989. Happy with both seeds so far!

Saturday, May 16 View Page
Big leaves on the 2051 Marshall plants.

Sunday, May 17 View Page
Wow. This 1989 grew a lot last night. Had to be 5–6” this is going to be a hard decision

Sunday, May 17 View Page
Here’s the other. You can see the stake. Grew a oof 3”

Sunday, May 17 View Page
1989s are really going to make for a tough decision. Ugh

Sunday, May 17 View Page
2051 Marshall has some beefy lookin tendrils. This one is about 12-14 inches. No complaints so far.

Sunday, May 17 View Page
She grew about 3-4” last night.

Sunday, May 17 View Page
The time has come. The Alaskan plants are crowding each other. Need to choose the strongest one

Sunday, May 17 View Page
Sorry but you were the weaker one! Now we are down to 1. That 1 was the strongest all along. It’s go time!

Sunday, May 17 View Page
Grow baby grow! You deserved to live :)

Wednesday, May 20 View Page
2051 Secondary. Definitely some aggressive secondary’s on this plant. 1989s and 2051 each growing 5-6” a day on the main

Wednesday, May 20 View Page
This is not good!

Wednesday, May 20 View Page
Get pranked! Today I decided which 1989 to keep. Both pretty much identical. Wanted the other one but had a stem split. This one is good though!

Wednesday, May 20 View Page
1989 Daletas. Just cruising with the main vine growth. Secondary’s just starting now. Very easy the get her to stay on the ground.

Friday, May 22 View Page
1989 just put on 9.5” since yesterday morning. She’s cruising

Friday, May 22 View Page
2051 Marshall. Absolutely loving this plant so far.

Sunday, May 24 View Page
This picture doesn’t show the entire plant but I’m off to my best start yet I’d say. 2051 is 7 feet long and secondary’s now starting to take off.

Sunday, May 24 View Page
This picture shows the 2051 better.

Sunday, May 24 View Page
Starting some giant sunflowers today!

Sunday, May 24 View Page
Under the 2051. Secondary’s really jumping now and are growing a few inches a day. I’ll take a pic of the 1989 tomorrow. She’s doing well and about 7ft as well and secondary’s starting to jump as well. Both mains on the plants are growing 8-10” a day now. Best start I’ve ever had

Monday, May 25 View Page
Time to plant some Carolina reapers!

Tuesday, May 26 View Page
The tilling has been completed! That looks nice :)

Tuesday, May 26 View Page
Made the decision to take the hoops off today! Weather is decent this week. 80s. 2051 Marshall shown here. Feeling good

Tuesday, May 26 View Page
Here’s the 1989 Daletas! Looking good. Always get nervous the first week or so since I’ve got a lot of woods behind the patch. Fingers crossed

Tuesday, May 26 View Page
Got my camera set up. Huge improvement this year is the amount of space they will be getting. Last year they got half the patch. Now they get the full patch which is about 2,000 SF in total

Pumpkin update! It’s been 8 days since I’ve last updated which was when the plants came out of the hoops. I’m very impressed with the 1989 Daletas. Very strong with the secondary’s and is the best performer at the moment.

Wednesday, June 3 View Page
2051 Marshall! She’s a bit slower but still a very nice plant. Secondary’s a bit slower than the 1989. Happy though! I’ve had a ton of cucumber beetles the last few days and I’ve seen 4 squash bugs. It’s going to be a bad year for the bugs. I sprayed some 7 on the leaves which is killing most of the cucumber beetles but not the squash bugs

Thursday, June 4 View Page
2051 sides. Starting to fill in pretty well

Thursday, June 4 View Page
Left side will fill in soon. Bit less sun on this side. Also haven’t had fresh rain in about 3 weeks now. Should see some tomorrow which will help boost the secondary’s

Thursday, June 4 View Page
About 50 cucumber beetles were dead on the leaves this morning on the plants. For some reason they like the 2051 better. Mild Winter is probably why there is so many.

Thursday, June 4 View Page
Going to be in the mid 80s today with full sunshine so I gave the plants a heavy watering.

Thursday, June 4 View Page
Let the fun begin. This is pretty bad. 4 squash bugs on the 2051 just on this leaf! About 10 in total. Not only is this a lot but this is happening about a month earlier than last year! I don’t even think I had this many last year. Woody’s coming over to spray after the sun goes down

Friday, June 5 View Page
1989 Daletas is really growing fast. Got a little rain this morning but not much at all. Need some more. Haven’t seen any bugs today so I think the pesticides woody sprayed helped. Probably about 2-3 weeks away from pollinating

Monday, June 8 View Page
Finally got some rain yesterday. Wasn’t much as it was a 15 min downpour but it was needed. Here’s the 1989 Daletas. She’s really growing fast. Pumpkin in the tip which will carry it out a few feet. Probably looking at June 20th or so for that one to open. We’ll see how big the plant gets. Could be an option but will probably go with the one after

Monday, June 8 View Page
2051 Marshall. Definitely the beefier plant in terms of vine size. Secondary’s a bit slower and some are dead heading themselves at a few feet. Pollination will probably be pretty far out on her

Wednesday, June 10 View Page
Got a pump yesterday to feed the pumpkins. A lot more powerful than the sump pump I used last year! 1 HP. This thing will throw water over 50 ft

Wednesday, June 10 View Page
Keeping it out of the patch will allow me to have more room for the plants.

Wednesday, June 10 View Page
1989 Daletas is just cruising. 18 ft today. Pumpkin in the tip but may take the one after since sides will be a bit bigger. Pollination likely at around 25 ft or so in the next 2 weeks. Should be plenty of secondary’s behind it.

Thursday, June 11 View Page
Finally got a little rain. Nice downpour that lasted about 35 min. Now back to the dry weather. Oh well. Maybe another shot at rain in a few weeks lol

Thursday, June 11 View Page
Option 1 on 1989. 7-10 days until she opens. 19.5 ft out will probably be at 20 ft.

Thursday, June 11 View Page
She’s coming along pretty well. If only the main vine could slow down a touch. Option 2 would likely be at 25 ft or so

Thursday, June 11 View Page
2051 vine is 18 ft. Has some work to do with the sides but coming along pretty well. Only if the main could slow on her as well. Not sure what’s with the rapid growth on the mains this year. Need to see a ton of growth in the next week. Night temps in the 50s though.

Friday, June 12 View Page
Catching up on some vine burying/moving boards this morning. Shown here is the 1989 Daletas.

Wednesday, June 17 View Page
The 1989 Daletas is just a gorgeous plant. Shown here. The main vine is just flying and secondary’s coming out well except for two stunted ones. 2 pumpkins can now be seen. First one is at 22.5 ft with 20 secondary’s behind. Second will be at around 25ft with 25 secondary’s behind. First will open Sunday or Monday. Second late next week. I’m leaning towards second. 2051 on the other hand is a bit slower and the pumpkin will likely be at 25 ft or so. One in the tip at 21 or so but a few stunted secondary’s behind so would like to get more growth on new secondary’s. Feeling good so far!

Wednesday, June 17 View Page
1989 Daletas

Wednesday, June 17 View Page
2051 Marshall shown here. Definitely a bit behind from the 1989 but not looking bad at all. Few gaps from the stunted secondary’s that aren’t doing much but new growth looks good! I think she will produce a big pumpkin. Happy with both plants!

Wednesday, June 17 View Page
Patch view

Wednesday, June 17 View Page
Time to feed. Now using 55 gal instead of half. Urea mate, humic, fish and seaweed, root, and some nitrogen added.

Thursday, June 18 View Page
Well here we go. The weather is about to heat up big time. 90 almost every day through the next week and no rain. Hasn’t rained for a longgg time and currently in a drought. I’ll have pollinations during this time so I’ll need to shade and stay on top of watering.

Thursday, June 18 View Page
The 2051 Marshall plant burns extremely easy. Was gone for 4 hours and before I left I watered the plants heavy for the upper 80s. Came back and multiple leaves were burnt. Soil moisture was alright but the leaves were just too hot from the sun. Need to set up a sprinkler to go off when I am out so the leaves get wet. No burns at all on the 1989! Can’t have this happen again!!

Friday, June 19 View Page
It was a hot day today! 90. 92 tomorrow! Shown here is the 1989. Umbrella over main tip for protection from sun

Friday, June 19 View Page
Closer look. She’s getting big

Friday, June 19 View Page
Pumpkin time baby! 22 ft out with 20 secondary’s behind on 1989. She may open tomorrow because the low is only going to be 72 tonight. For the reason I’ve placed that red solo cup over her just in case!

Friday, June 19 View Page
If she doesn’t open tomorrow I’ll be pollinating her Sunday! This will be my earliest pollination ever

Friday, June 19 View Page
Here’s the next pumpkin on the 1989. 25 feet out with 25 secondary’s behind. Will be a very Hard decision. About a week behind the one before it and plant is getting big. We’ll see! Hmm

Saturday, June 20 View Page
Tomorrow’s the day on the 1989 Daletas.

Saturday, June 20 View Page
I’m leaning towards this one though on the 1989. It has 5 more secondary’s than the first one. (25 in total) 25 ft out. Opening next THU-FRI which will still be my second earliest pollination ever.

Saturday, June 20 View Page
Going to be another hot day today with temps hitting 93 degrees with full sunshine. Hard on the 2051 so I’ll be misting it often

Saturday, June 20 View Page
2051 Marshall. She’s filling in now as these Warmer nights are helping.

Saturday, June 20 View Page
Possible keeper on 2051! I’m going away for 3 days next Friday so woody may have to pollinate her. I’ll get measurements soon but she’s out there

Sunday, June 21 View Page
First pollination of the season on the 1989 Daletas! 5 lober. 1 lobe that is a tad off but overall pretty good in my opinion. Pollinated with the 2051 Marshall. 23 ft out with 20 secondary’s behind. Another pumpkin opening next weekend being 27 ft out with 25 secondary’s behind. Hmmmm

Sunday, June 21 View Page

There she is on the 2051 Marshall! 23 ft out with 22 secondary’s behind. If I counted the stunted ones that are a few feet it would be 25-26

Looks like the pumpkin on the 2051 will open Thursday or Friday

Tuesday, June 23 View Page
Plant is a bit on the smaller side than what I would like but I’m not worried. These warm nights continue to make for some fast growth!

Tuesday, June 23 View Page
The main vine on the 2051 is just so vigorous, every time I get her down she comes back up. Been fighting her all along. I guess it’s a good thing though! Secondary’s beefing up

Another pumpkin on the 1989 also looks to open tomorrow! I originally was thinning she should be my keeper but I’m leaning towards the first. We’ll see. Time will tell!

Looking at the camera here on the 1989 daletas she seems a bit slow. She’s 8 days old today and still not on the ground so somethings going on. Damn. I’ll be coming home today so I’ll check her out

Monday, June 29 View Page
Blossom looks a bit brown and rotten. Jesus. Hopefully I’m wrong...

Monday, June 29 View Page
I didn’t want to come home to this. 1989 daletas is not doing what it should do. First pumpkin I pollinated at 23.5 ft is not growing and blossom is rotting. 8 days old. Second pumpkin is 4 days old and you can see it’s rotting and not growing. I don’t know why this is happening! Maybe weather related because when I pollinated those it was very hot and muggy. I’m getting a bit nervous. We have a 3rd pollination at 38 ft tomorrow. Yes folks. 38 ft. Main vine is 42 ft. I don’t know why it’s growing that fast. Keep your fingers crossed that this one does something! I need some luck.

Monday, June 29 View Page
It’s hard not to lose hope on the 1989. It’s sad and disappointing that two pollinations were a no go. I cut the blossom off on ya first pollination so we’ll see what it does but I’m not expecting any growth. This one right here needs to do something. When I pollinated the other two the temps were in the 90s with nasty humidity. I’ll be pollinating this one with temps in the upper 60s to low 70s and some rain until Wednesday. Much better pollination weather. I’m hoping it was just the weather!

Monday, June 29 View Page
Unbelievable. Now I find out the main vine broke on the 1989.. now if that pumpkin doesn’t take I’ll have to pollinate on a secondary. come on!

Monday, June 29 View Page
She was split more than half way...

Monday, June 29 View Page
See the pumpkin? Cmon. I’m praying that she takes. Last chance on main vine! 38 ft out!

Monday, June 29 View Page
I’ll be up all night tonight thinking about her. Cmon,.. pleaseeeee be successful. All the other pumpkins on the secondary’s will open in like a week or two which brings me into the first week of July to the second week. I need this pollination to work! Temps this week will be in the upper 60s to low 70s. 1 day in the 80s THU but much better than the 90s I pollinated in. Cmon

2051 is 8 days old today. Taking a long time to get on the ground this year but I’d say by tomorrow (dap 9) she’s on the ground. Will probably be one of my smallest day 10s but day 10-20 is when it matters more.

Saturday, July 4 View Page
Time to update on the 1989 Daletas. She is 4 days old today. This is the one that I need to work out because my main broke and this was the last pumpkin before break. Others weren’t growing. I’ve terminated a lot of vines in the last few days. 8 secondary’s remain. 3 are 2-3 ft long. Last night the stem oozed a ton. I guess that’s a good sign but don’t want it to get out of hand! Big plant behind her. Have to set her up soon. Cmon baby!

Saturday, July 18 View Page
I need to take a chill pill. The numbers aren’t good on the pumpkins but it’s not a race. The plants are twice the size as last years so shouldn’t the pumpkins be bigger? Well no. I had about 20 tertiarys on each plant and 8 secondary’s on the 2051. They were taking most of the energy. They were growing at least a foot a day because each tertiary or secondary was 3-6 ft long! Everything has been terminated so the pumpkins will hopefully respond now. No more growing plant! That’s why I shouldn’t of gone away for a week lol.

Saturday, July 18 View Page
Pile of tertiarys and some secondary’s. Cmon pumpkins. Kick into gear now. The energy is all yours.

The 2051 Marshall has been harvested! She has an estimated weight of 1100 pounds. I’m happy that I was able to get 2 years in a row of success. 2017-18 was rough but don’t give up because you will bounce back! Pb is 1138 pounds. It’s going to be close but I’ll be happy with anything over 1,000 pounds! She gets weighed tomorrow at 2 PM.

The 1989 Daletas is all loaded up and ready to head to RI in the morning! She has an estimated weight of 951 pounds. She had a nice flat bottom. Very happy to be getting 2 pumpkins to the scales again this year.

My gut says she will go light because she never really aged but I honestly won’t care if she goes light. I already beat my PB!

Right before she hit the scale. She was estimated at 950 at my house but 1089 in RI! I was way off on circumference because I was going to high I guess. Was off by like a foot lol. Great feeling.

I’ve been meaning to make a post. I just want to thank all of you again for your support this season! It was a great season and it will be a season to remember! 2 pumpkins over 1,000 pounds in a single year is a first for me. Plus a new personal best this year at 1184.5 pounds and that just topped everything off. It was an awesome feeling! I did struggle in the beginning but the pumpkins cooperated at the end of July and everything came together in the end. I never thought I would get a PB because of the peak gains only 25-30 pounds a day but all it takes is consistency! Don’t ever give up. In 2017-18 I had no pumpkins for 2 years because of disease but I cleared out another area and I’ve had good luck since. I’m not stopping. I will be back next year to grow an even bigger pumpkin. Thank you all.

Took a trip down to the New York Botanical Gardens today in Bronx NY to help display 3 pumpkins that were all over 2,000 pounds! 2268.5 pounds, 2031.5 pounds and 2,021 pounds! The biggest one was grown in NH and the others were grown in RI. I helped get the seeds out of the 2021 pounder and climbed inside! Biggest pumpkin I’ve ever been in before. Was an awesome experience! Enjoy the pictures. ??

Wow. I can’t believe My 1184.5 pounder has lasted this long. She was getting a bit soft on the outside so I thought she would be pretty nasty on the inside but nope! Completely fresh! I got the seeds out which were real nice with a few sprouted ones with cots! Very impressed. I was even able to fit inside! Crazy that I did this in December.
