For me the perfect size is 1" to 2" stems. You can also cut down bigger suckers to this smaller size. If you plant bigger suckers. It will look like this photo for a bit but will eventually perk up. The biggest thing I have learned recently (this last winter actually) is to get the dirt very very wet then don't water it again until it becomes very dry or the clones wilt from lack of water. If you get the dirt soaking wet and take the clones inside the dirt will not dry up until the roots establish on them first. In the past I have kept the dirt very wet the whole time and I realized that is a mistake that causes rot on the stems before roots can establish.
