Pictured above: If any of you have watched the Hallmark film "Growing the Big One", you may recognize this building from one of the early scenes where the crowd counts down to the start of the growing season. This is the town hall in Fort Langley, BC, and it's only a short distance away from where BC's actual weigh-off is held.
Speaking of the weigh-off, last year's was a smashing success, both in terms of weight and the number of entries. My favourite part is always getting to meet the growers. It's funny, most of the time I struggle to remember folks' names, but even though I'd only met some of the growers once, I remembered who they were right away. Glenn and Jeff were a couple of the first to welcome me into the group; I'll never forget how they greeted me like I was an old friend returning home. It was then that I realized that this hobby attracts a very special group of people I've not encountered elsewhere. It's as if we're all one big sports team, rooting for one another and the collective win. In that regard, the name "Great Pumpkin Commonwealth" perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the organization. I'm hoping that I can carry that spirit forwards by sharing news of the GPC with friends, coworkers, and acquaintances.
