I was playing around with some 3x3 and 5x5 squares. If I had a lot of self discipline I could plant at 3' spacing and have up to 36 plants. This would mostly be an attempt at getting large first truss blossoms on large healthy plants... and because about half the first trusses usually will not turn out good, I could cull those plants. But I'm always tempted to see if there might be a good side flower. Ideally I'd try different mulches, fertilizers, and watering regimens and keep track of them. And of course, various genetics.
I dont really have a comprehensive solution for disease and that is the biggest problem of all. I have some ideas but they may need more time to take affect than just six months.
