this seems to be a hot topic lately. i would also like to know what some of the heavy hitters think about this. i believe that most new growers don't pay attention to their soil, to much Ph? compost..enough organic material, tilling, have you gone deep enough, fertilizling....when do you start 0-0-60, how long does it take the plant to start receiving the benifits form the fertilizer. so many questions....i can only tell you that next year i will 1 - get some cow manure, 2 - start a cover crop, 3 - get my seeds from this web site - 4 - get soaker hoses 5 - give my plants more room 6 - pray that Cleon shows up in Germany....LMAO...owen

Owen:
Just a word of caution, I used soaker hoses this year for about a month. Will never use them again.
1) They plug easily and you get more water and fert in one area, once their down under your vines ya can't pull them up to unplug them.
2) Have ya ever tried to bury vines or for that matter s shape your main over top of a soaker hose, causes stress as the vine goes up over and back down and is hard to lay the main down so it roots good at the nodes.
3) If ya happen to walk close to the hose and catch your foot on the hose it pulls. Yep under your vine tearing roots out and even snapping vines.
I switched to over head watering and fertilizing and it works better, the water runs down the centre of the leaf and down the leaf stalk to the waiting roots at the base.
Just some advice, you decide whether good or not...

Ernie, thanks for sharing your experience on this one. I can use all the advice i can get. I'll have to think about it, i guess that there are positives and negatives to almost all the differenct ways of watering/fertilizing.
With you over head watering have you had any problem with mildew or keeping the area where the pumpkin is dry?
thanks again, owen

Ernie;
I`m glad I read your response, I was just about to get some soaker hoses. I think I am going to go to an over head misting system instead. I think this will work great on them real hot days.

I had soaker hoses last year and they all plugged up so this year I went to overhead watering. A little less convenient when it comes to keep insecticide/fungicide on the leaves but overall much better. Another interesting point is that all the patches of heavy hitters I've seen use overhead watering. I watch what the big guys/gals do and follow along. No sense reinventing the wheel.
Owen,
Cleon has been nothing but a curse in my patch ever since I put him there. Anything I put him next to dies. Look at a couple of diaries from last year and you will agree. He showed up in John D's patch and the very next post was "seaosn over". Jeff5 did to and then he never posted again. If you want him I'll pack him up and send him to you:) I'm looking for a replacement because my patch just isnt complete without some sort of good luck charm. Been looking for Pumpkin Belly but haven't found him yet. Gotta find something.
