I entered my largest pumpkin today and it weighed in at 140 pounds. It took third out of 10 pumpkins entered. First place went to a 200 pounder and 2nd to a 180 pounder. I just had my fingers crossed I would not come in last. (: I took quite a ribbing from hubby as mine did not grow nearly as big this year. (I had one weigh 192 pounds last year and it also took third.) I am proud as a peacock...at least I am placing! I am so happy I found this place to come to to talk pumpkin. Thanks to you guys, I sure have high hopes for next year! I have learned a lot from you already!

Congratulations! More power to you next year! Build up that soil and have it tested next spring.

What is a proper test for the soil? Mine is 100% horse manure....with fresh additions each spring. I also used 10 10 10 fertilizer, miracle gro and 0 0 60 for the last month. Oh yes...should lime be used?

Yo Storm,
With all that manure your Ph will be very low..best have a Ph test and add lime during the autumn (fall for you lot).

Desert Strom, Is that 0 0 60 a folair or granular fertilizer and much do I need to use?

One Dude....this is my first year using it. It is a pink granular fertilizer that I stirred into hot water to dissolve as much as possible. I used 1/2 cup per 5 gallons water...first I dissolved in a bit of hot water and then added cold water. I then poured it on the main plant stump and also on the tap roots near the pumpkin. Some in here use 1 cup to 5 gallons of water...but I was too nervous of it splitting the pumpkin to try that. This was the first year that I used it and I did not start till the last of August. (I did not know about it) Apparently you apply this "Potash" fertilizer right after the plant has fertilized fruit started. Do this about twice a week.
