Buddy, The mounding helps the soil to warm early in the season. My plant suffered stump rot this past season too, but I suspect overwatering. Soakers weren't spaced far enough from mound. Just my 2 cents worth !

I don't think mounding the soil was the cause of the stump rot. More likely it recieved to much moisture or not enough air circulation. I wouldn't bury the stump or the main vine untill it is about 5 feet out. Bury the crap out of secondaries though! Oh and one more thing try to keep the direct sun off of the stump later in the season...

Do you guys that don't bury the stump have SVB's? Even using the systemic insecticide Merit. I still had a few borers.

What may or may not happen to your plant if you don't bury your main or secondary vines at all because the garden area may be small and the plant runs ontop of your lawn?

1 reason's of bury the vines is to keep the plant from blowing around in the wind. 2nd reason to make a secondary rooting system

Squash Vine Borer, the bore in to the vine killing it.

If your plant runs on top of your lawn then that is ok. The tendrils from the vine will grab onto the grass stems and anchor to them.
SVB = Squash Vine Borer
