I have a plant growing 90 degrees in the wrong direction. Would it be a good idea to let it grow like this for about 6' and then turn it in the right direction in hopes it will give me some slack if need be later in the season

I would say turn it now. Each leaf sends down roots. The less distrubance the better. Do it in steps with a day inbetween for adjustment. I turned one right off the stump in four moves "all made in the heat of the day". The hot part of the day finds your plant more flexible. If the turn causes one or two leaves to hold the plant up or wrong in any way cut those one or two leaves off.
I was coached to get the vine in the ground as soon as possible. I have two plants. Both are a little different but acting similar. One went underground immediately the other was turned and stayed on top for a foot or more.
