What is the proper way to bury a vine, when is it done and why is it done?

I use a Warren Hoe, drag a "V" ahead of the vine, shove it in and cover with patch soil. Two reasons why it is done. One it helps hold down the plant possibly preventing wind damage. Two, it is thought, by some, that SVB does not enter the plant underground. A covered vine may take away a lot of entry points for Mr.SVB.

Reason #3 is to accelerate tap root development at each leaf junction. Some believe in this some don't.
I do and it is the primary reason that I burry the vines. -Brent

HEY NEIGHBOR! I don't trench, just throw dirt over the top. We in calif dont have Squash Vine Borers... Lucky us! I start to bury as soon as I can (around 2.5- 3 ft long). I find that it disturbs the vine and roots less when you trim the anchor roots away around your pumpkin after it sets. If you trench you have to dig down instead of slicing across.
