It seems strange to me that my female flowers are opening up before the males on my caspers. Its not happening on one plant, but all of them. I have one female open today but no males. Do females stay for more than a day? Also, if I do not pollinate now will it still be producing flowers in mid July?

If the female on that first day it opens does not get pollinated chances are the pumpkin will not grow. More females will continue to open futher down the main vine (also on the side vines)You should have male flowers by then as its still early. Most giant pumpkins get set (pollinated) the first two weeks in july around 10 to 15 feet from the main stump. Good Luck, Al

Sort of changing the subject, but I was wondering this the other day. Let's say, for example, the fruit set is 10 feet from the stump. Does it matter if it's 2 ft out on the main vine, then 8 ft out on a side vine to equal 10. Or can it be 8 ft out on the main, then 2 ft out on a side. Would it make a difference as long as it's 10 ft. out?

Hey Brigitte....Most people prefer a main vine set over a secondary. Only going with a secondary when it gets late in the season or the big one on the main split. plenty of time to wait for a main vine set. Shannon
