Many people use styrofoam with lots of holes poked or drilled through it for drainage of water. Other will use a bed of ordinary play sand. The idea is the sand shift as the pumpkin grows, yet drains water well. The latest think is recycled paper mill belting material. It's thin, tough as nails, yet drains water and is pliable.

I like wood with some sand. 1x6's - or ply wood in 6-12 inch width's. add more as you need. firm- yet water will between them.

Will sand keep the pumpkin more rounded?

It'll most likely get a flat bottom anyway because of the weight.
