Well I have breen out checking on my pumpkins. There has been an unbelievable (for me anyway) amount of growth. In bed no. 1 the 770 Van has grown 10 inches in a 25 hour period. The 751 Van 8 inches. The other two plants did less, so they are out. In bed no 2 The 945 Van has grown 7 inches...and the 770 Van has grown 6 inches. In bed no 3, it is a toss up of a 640.5 Gardner and a 633.5 Pearce. The pearce is 1/2 inch longer. I have lugged out my jack knife several times, and so far it hasn't cut a thing!!! Here I go out again....will I cut this time????? (Only my jackknife knows for sure.) *grin* **sob**. Have a great day everyone,
Sue in N.B.

It chokes me up but I did it.....I now have a 770 Van in bed one, a 945 Van in bed too...oh yes....there is also a 699.5 Van in bed also. (It was not interfering with the other one so I left it for now anyway.) In bed 3 is a 640.5 Gardner. It sure was time for the culling....they had their little "fingers" wrapped around anything and everything they touched. Wrap after wrap after wrap. I had to break ones little fingertips off. It had a deathgrip on one of the ones I had culled. I did manage to move all the discarded plants without damage to the #1 plants I was keeping. Next year I just might start only 3 seeds and then I won't have to "kill" any. (: I may not have as good a luck but at least I won't feel so guilty.)<:
I measured each ones growth gain in a 25 hour period and took into consideration the diameter of the vines and their general length. Hubby helped me with the last one. I had decided on one but wanted his opinion. I got it...and thankfully he picked the same one as I. These three plants have all had male blossems yesterday and have female ones coming. I sure hope I did the right thing. ( I probably will hear the ones I culled crying out in my dreams........

Thanks for the encouragment Jim. My husband came in from checking the patch this morning It had rained in the night and one plant I had "killed" still had blossems opened on it....vainly trying to live. He asked how come the plant I kept had only two blossems and the one I chopped off had three which were still open! (He helped me choose that last plant I saved and was having fun teasing.) I felt awful. I think for sure I will only start the amount of seeds next year that I can handle. That way there will be NO culling. How do you bring yourself to choose the plant to keep?
