I've seen (and bid) on some squash seeds that went into the stratosphere, but I am shocked to see the WR 2200 Jutras going for more money than the WR 2819 Paton Pumpkin Seeds. That is just stunning.

Why do y'all think that is?

Its absolutely wild to me. I mean on 1 hand, there is a massive breakthrough of squash genetics (but not really, because green & Orange crosses have been made a lot in the past) and there seems to be very little difference amongst many of the top pumpkin genetics, and a wider spread of parents producing similar result offspring.
Maybe everyone's just excited to try something new?

Seems like a lot of big growers went green this season, not sure if it was discussed somewhere, but they seemed to make an effort to push the genetics forward. Can only be a good thing for our sport.

Maybe because the Jutras squash was 20% bigger than its nearest peers, while the Paton pumpkin was only 2% bigger than its nearest peer. But yes the price for sought after squash seeds has been high especially last year. I think at one point last year the 1109 Jutras may have sold for more than the 2365 Wolf and yes historically the best squash seeds didnt come at such a premium. Someone would have to fact check me on that, but both were in the $800 range?? Its just supply and demand.

As the 1109 Jutras seed supply started dwindling, I think growers were looking to keep squash growing alive with more comparable weights to the AG's.
The plan had been laid once before with Dave Cantrell making the Ag x squash cross, Then Scott Holub, Joe Jutras,and Todd Skinner (forgive me if I missed a name here) all grew world records using those improved genetic lines. In recent years I believe that several growers intuitively felt that without an infusion of life into the cuurrent squash lines, the future of squash would be dim. The dark orange 1885 Werner and dark orange 2365 Wolf had great world record genetics for crossing into the last of the 1109 Jutras' dark green squash genes. Many great seeds are now out there and the sky is the limit! I think we are going to see some really big squash in the coming years

It is just an example of how when something is scarce, then it is valuable. There are LOTS of fantastic pumpkin seeds out there. There arent very many fantastic greenie seeds.
