I have been pondering this for a while, the main in LG's seldom if ever produce a female. Why not terminate the main at, let's say 10-12 feet and encourage secondaries. Maybe some of you already are. I'm thinking of doing this on at least one plant to see what happens.

               Hi Andy:
I will try terminating a main and see what happens.

Hi Andy--I usually terminate the mains at some point and have every year.I think your idea is sound.
Right now some of my mains are at the 18-19 foot stage and I will cut them off to encourge the side vines.
May plants from a May 6 seed start have passed 18 feet and I pollinated the first ones last night.I believe this is far too early though. It is just that the hot summer produced unusual fast growth wich I didn't expect.
  Cheers--AE

Must, be true with most gourds, Almost all of my giant pears set on secondaries. About what square footage do you guys like to use on long gourds?
