Is it common to support the prize LG fom its own weight when it matures to avoid it breaking off the vine? I am not worried about the vine slipping. I am worried about the LG breaking off from its own weight. I am new at this and my gourd is maturing and weighs alot. I don't want it to break off. Any ideas would be great. Thank you!

I used to be worried about that as well but now I only worry about the stem being cut by the trellis which is fencing. I placed chamois strips folded twice ( four layers ) between the stem and the wire it's sitting on. If you have a straight pull I think your OK. I just culled a big one yesterday and the stem was no where near close to breaking. Good luck

I have the vine taped to the top of the trellis so the stem of the LG doesn't contact the trellis. All of the weight is on the tape/vine. I am worried about the LG breaking away from its stem much like a jack-o-lantern when you pick it up by its stem and the stem breaks off. I thought by supporting the LG's weight by taping it to a stake it would relieve stem stress/vine stress and allow the seeds to mature without risking loosing the prize LG. Anyone ever do this or am I over thinking it?

If you have any duds on the plant take a pair of scissors and cut the stem. You'll see that it is very tough and capable of supporting more weight than it looks. I would be more concerned about the stem crimping as the gourd gets heavier. It sounds like you have that covered.

I think attatching to a stake is the best idea, plus when it is time to take it down you already have it secured.

LOL Chris! Wait until you see this baby! I like your idea John. At least I will be able to sleep at night with the LG secure. Thanks for the advice everybody and good luck!
