Use a rope thats a thick as clothes line or thicker. just make a loop and hang the stem of the gourd through the loop. You end up lifting the stem with the loop and the tying the rope tight on your trellis. As the gourd grows the bend in the stem against the rope keeps the gourd from moving and the stem is alot stronger and tougher than the vine.

my top is farm fence I put a piece of a pool noodle over the wire and support the stem I then tie the vine back to the wire or support where it meets the stem with 1/2 " cotton rope
Good Luck Tim

When I get a real good one going, I put screw eyes in the end of a 2x4 and tie it to the trellis by gourd. I use electrical tape to secure the gourd to the 2x4, as it stretches as the gourd grows. Then I put a stake or fence post in the ground at the bottom of the 2x4 and attach them so it doesn't swing in the wind. Unfortunately, disease has been wiping out my gourds until this year, when they are short and fat. For a picture http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=226444

I use a rubber "no hub" plumbing fixture around the top of the gourd. Remove the clamps, cut rubber to fit, secure bottom clamp, then run cable ties or wire between top clamp and rubber boot. Then hang gourd from that. It will take all the weight off the stem.
