If we could prolong the active 'green' life of the pumpkin plant, rather than allow it to degenerate into old age, then it will be able to photosynthesise for longer - and make a bigger pumpkin.
But how do we delay senescence - cytokinin application might work?

I am no expert but plants apparently suffer oxidation and free radicals like we do. All I know is there are some metals and enzymes that help protect the plant while other factors (heat, uv
light and other metals (aluminum?) contribute to the demise.

Last year I sprayed Cytokinin/ga3 mix on a plant and it rained same day, the pumpkin popped open...maybe I sprayed too much.

Gerald, looks like you need a free radicle scavenger, perhaps Super Oxide-Dismutase (SOD). Its found in Maple Bud Sryup.

Oxidative stress and antioxidant activity as the basis of senescence in maize leaves
“The results suggest that leaf senescence in general and early senescence of early cv. X 3342 is associated with higher oxidative stress and a decline in antioxidant activity towards maturity, and Mn-SOD has a major role in the scavenging of superoxide radicals during maize leaf senescence.”

Interesting !! Can someone give me an application rate ? I would like to try it
