Is there an optimum number to prevent blow ups? Is there a max you can grow competitively on a plant?

Depends what your objective is, I don't entertain the idea of multiple Marrows on a plant but then I lose more than 80% of mine. If you want to have a play around and get a few seeds like Brad I'd say go for it and let a few grow. If you want to take the risk and go for a big one like a pumpkin it needs to be only one!

Since my 220 is being stubborn about putting out female flowers, I will be growing at least 2 on the 173 plant for weigh offs. I've also been giving them fertilizer so maybe having multiple on a plant will help in preventing splits. When growing giant cantaloupes you go 4-2-1 culling to prevent the chosen cantaloupe from splitting.

wile coyote I've never heard anything like that on cantaloupes. I set the lope I wanna keep and we roll with that one. There's no 4-2-1.

I got 4-2-1 off of the cantaloupe board somewhere. This is to prevent splitting of the cantaloupe.
