Well I guess apple breeders jobs are safe from the AI takeover, for now. AI is like a very smart child... It has all the brains it will ever need but not much real life experience. One thing to note is that apple growers want all 5 ovules within the fruit to get pollinated otherwise the fruit will end up lopsided and unmarketable. They haul in lots of beehives so that each flower gets multiple visits from bees.
Not sure the genetic mechanism for being self infertile, but most species do prefer to outcross rather than be effectively asexual. I think you are right about the dioecious/monoecious flowering.
