We have a winner! They are the dreaded vine borer eggs. Very similar in appearance to Squash bug, but there are diferences
1. Location: Vine borer eggs are at the base of a leaf stalk or on the vine, squash bug eggs are usually on the underside of leaves.
2. Number of eggs: squash bugs are in clusters of many eggs, vine borer usually a single egg or just a few.
3. Shape: you have to look closely for this one but vine borer eggs are round/oval and squash bug eggs have a very slight narrowing on the tip, more like a chicken egg.
4. I saw the pest fly in and lay the egg, and it got away before I could kill it. Shortly after I sprayed with a systemic insecticide, Assail (Acetamide). I would typically use a soil drench like Merit (Imidacliprid) but the ground was already saturated from another inch of rain yesterday. I will try to keep the flowers cut off to protect the bees.
