They sell a gizmo that measures the gallons going through a garden hose. Maybe verify that you are watering as much as you think you are. That seems like enough/the right amount of water... As you note, more might be excessive.

Your water need will increase as the plant size increases, too. As long as the soil never looks basically dry and weed seeds could still sprout in or on it, 'just' (in my opinion) water them every other day with that intent, skipping a day when it has rained. Never let up on ferts because it has rained, except for during it. Just my nickel's worth. eg
