Went away on vacation. Came back to main vine leaves wilted. It started in 1st secondary vine on right side. I cut that off a week ago. Its moving down the main vine now.

The main vine itself looks healthy and feels healthy. I cut of the 1st(oldest leaf on main vine. Had some milky/ foamy water in it

What is it and how could I stop it?

Hey Austin! Post a photo in your diary and add a link to this thread. No way to know otherwise.

You can look at numerous posts about it here:

I'm a BigPumpkins troll, so I'm always on here for the latest thing to look at - THIS ONE TIME, you can email a few (3, 4) pics to

pumpkinpal@msn.com

because time is of the essence when it comes to diseases and such - I am not a Premium member, but I've never had an issue with sending pictures in - I've just hadta be patient, lol---eg

We might not be learning the hard way here, but things like this should work and the issue should be found out in the interim. Easy for ME to say, lol;

PS---You'll have to include your BP credentials with the email, and I'm not even sure it'll allow us because of maybe the different computer locations? I bet on horses, too, not...lol---eric g

Is that frass right at the stump head???

I havent noticed any frass. The main vine is getting a bit soft close to stump compared to 7 8 ft further up.

Is it possible to cut main vine so this disease doesn't keep spreading? Could the plant survive?

I had a similar problem last year. By the middle of July there were no leaves left as they had dried up, rotted and fallen over. Shortly thereafter I noticed Mosaic Virus on the new growth. If its mosaic, there's no cure. I never had my plant tested for it but I've seen it before and other growers confirmed it. It's ruthless.

I did still manage a pumpkin but the growth stopped about day 67.

Do you have any leaves that look like this Austin?

Kevin....Yes. I have some leaves that look like that. I put down some basic fertilizer thinking nutrient deficiency yesterday.

Did you notice any wet spots around the stump, how long did it take leaves to die? you may want to cut off the dead part and disect the main and the stump. Take good pictures and maybe somebody here can help out.

I would definitely cut off the diseased portion. Sooner rather than later. I have had something similar in my patch.

I did it....cut of main vine from dead area to stump. Total of about 5 ft of mIn vine that. Only had 1 secondary that was dead. That's where it started from. Main vine was getting slightly squishy closest to stump

Cut the main length wise in half, see if you can find the issue

Thanks Eric. That does not look good. Probably a disease I am not aware of, but definitely not vine borers or old age.

I guess the only bright spot is that when it's a well-defined area of the plant, perhaps the rest of it can be saved by heavy pruning away of the diseased parts, with a good-sized buffer zone into the lively material if possible. Whoops - all of that's been said, lol; And, you're welcome, Smallmouth---eg
