I live in the central valley of California and am worried the plants are started are not going to make it. Do you fellow growers think it is to late to start a couple of more plants.

No. Give it a shot. there may be limitations on when they'll be ready to be POLLINATED, but i feel that the plants are mechanized to hurry up once they are in the day/night cycle of the REAL growing area - i, JUST 5 minutes ago, removed the seed coat from one of my latest sprouters, and if it were not for any others i already have sprouted, it'd be !neat! to get 'er in the ground today, if no other option;
FYI, it IS better to have plants be sooner in the ground and pollinate late rather than this other situation, (reversed) as i once grew a 510.5 in probably '04 that SOLD off the trailer before even being unstrapped - pollinated 8/4, a month late, sold on about 9-29. a good day! a more-top or more-lucky grower might have had 1200#. PS - the plants you HAVE might respond favorably once they are PLANTED for real - i am in the SAME boat as you - Hello!---eg

Not sure about your weather but my first year I lost my first planting in late May and started more plants. Went in the ground as just emerged seedlings June 1st and still ended up with a 500 lb kin in a very short grow season. I only grow orange and not big and didnt have much of a clue what I was doing at the time. I would have already started more. What do you have to lose???? Something is better than nothing.

Think i'll report here as to my progress with my sad, little seedlings (1912 Carter and 575 Wolf). my 2003 Haist is THE biggest seedling i have ever had, AND in such a short time - i think it had ONE seed leaf formed from the TWO it is meant to have! what a ride so far. i think it (or Barry White) said 'Yeeaahhhh, Babyhhh..." as i first watered it in today, lol---eg
