Is there a pattern here? Is 400-500 not enough?

If they were grown this year I think the weather had a bigger impact then the actual square footage.

25 x 25 is 625 sq. 3 plants in 25 x 75... I have settled on this in my mind atleast anyway.

All my plots are the same 25*25 I was actually wondering if this was too much. I just didnt want to be crammed this year and have more room to work.

Hey Wiz I was thinking the same as you, Also, the 10 ft minimum should be moved to 15.

What is the average distance out for the 10 heaviest?

An even better question,...
What was the average distance out for the top 5 in each of the last five years? (That would take the weather of any given year out of the equation.)
(See, those 'story problems' in elementary math really do matter!)

That should say no data after the 1469.

Thanks for posting. A quick glance at that data suggests to me that we have very little correlation to the distance out on the vine. Just take your best one that is 10 feet out or more!
Around 700 square feet might be a sweet spot, but there are some big ones in the 400 square foot range. The question might be, what would those two have done if the plant was 700?
Another way to look at it would be in the soil. What is the water supplying capacity of your soil? Soils that have loads of organic matter might get by with 400, for example, to supply all that the plant and fruit needs, while others of us might need 700 or more.
Or yet another way to look at it would be the root penetration of the soil. My soil gets dense, and allows less root growth than others. Too bad we can quickly look at root mass like we can for leaf area.

Correction: Too bad we CAN'T look at root mass as easily as we can look at the leaf area.

Last year I had Mike N. at the AGGC pull some data on this very topic. I wrote a small article about it for our CT newsletter. The #'s are a little old, but quite interesting.
The #'s after > represent weight and the #'s after = is the average square feet. For example, > 1399 = 760.333 means that all of the pumpkins in the AGGC data base at the time I asked that were over 1399 lbs had an average square feet per plant of 760.333 square feet.
The second set of data points represent what the average square feet was in a given weight range. Hope this helps....Ray Leonzi
> 1399 = 760.333 > 1299 = 696.413 > 1199 = 684.337 > 1099 = 646.502 > 999 = 631.593 > 899 = 623.448 > 799 = 629.165 > 699 = 625.805 > 599 = 620.358 > 499 = 617.523
> 1399 = 760.333 > 1299 < 1400 = 679.739 > 1199 < 1300 = 676.555 > 1099 < 1200 = 624.104 > 999 < 1100 = 619.151 > 899 < 1000 = 611.655 > 799 < 900 = 639.089 > 699 < 800 = 617.05 > 599 < 700 = 603.646 > 499 < 600 = 601.554
