I'm throwing around the idea of holding a competition to see who grows the largest pumpkin in 2008. Possibly $5 to $10 per pumpkin, winner take all, or winner take most and rest to charity?. I want to see if there is any interest first.
What are your thoughts and suggestions?

Not to be a smart alec, but isn't this kind of what the weigh offs are for?

Maybe 40% to heaviest, 40% to closest to 500, and 20% to charity? Just an idea to try and have some fun.

Sounds more like a football pool to me. Could be interesting unless folks feel it undermines the establishment?

I wasn't trying to undermine pumpkin growing. I was just trying to come up with a fun idea. Too many people have sent comments about lack of interest. Thanks anyways.
Good Luck in 2008!

Pkn Guy...don't give up so soon!!! Maybe try this on the new growers thread?? I think I can (with some luck) grow one real close to the 500# mark!!! There might be a bunch of interest in this kind of contest!!! Especially, if some of the prize money would go to a good cause...like the OAF!!! Don't give up!!!...Just try and contact some of us who grow them as big as we can, just a little smaller!?!? Peace, Wayne

Paster ,I see your point ,,,,,,but this little thing he`s trying to do wouldn`t effect, weigh offs ,,,because each club ,,has there own funds !!I`D GO IN on it pumpkin guy ,,it`s better then people, going to a casino and spending hundreds of dollars they dont have !!i mean five or ten dollars isn`t going to kill anyone ,,,,most people spend more then that on junk food <<<<<<<like me !and untill I get over 1000lbs I consider my self a backyard grower.Just my opinion

last year on behalf of the orange angel foundation i advertized for a weigh-off contest with cash awards going to the growers who came closed to the maximum weight catagory of 300-399, 400-499, 500-599, 600-699, 700-799, 800-899, 900-999, 1000-1099, 1100-1199, 1200-1299, 1300-1399 plus heaviest weighed in competition
the cost was $30.00 and no matter what your pumpkin weighed you had a chance to win that award catagory by weighing the closest to your catagory maximum weight (in other words 399 would be the best you could do in that catagory, if you weighed 400 and up you are in the 400 pound class
( closest to the maximum in a weight class without going over )
a portion was to go to the orange angel foundation coats for kids drive want to know how many growers responded ? four

I think what Pap is saying is a cool idea. The first post from Pumpkin Guy that came out, wasn't clear. But I am interested in what is being said now.
