I was thinking of making a 3ft hole, 6inch deep with a ring of manure/compost before putting a seedling in the center to grow, does anybody do that or do you just mix it all up, before putting the pumpkin plant on a small mound at a slight angle.

Richard,
You might want to consider mixing up the manure and compost so that the roots can get to them. As the side vines grow, you can bury them with compost if you want.
Out here we have slugs and snails. Some growers use "Dead-line" or snail and slug pellets. I used the "pet-friendly" pellets last year and did not have any problems with the slugs and snails.
Good luck!

I might consider making a 3 foot ring that is 6 inches ABOVE the rest of the ground with all the good stuff mixed in well. Creating a hole can create a bowl and to avoid stump rot, a lot of growers elevate the stump slightly.
