Times have changed. Four or five years ago if you asked a heavy hitter about planting a self or sib seed, they would tell you it’s not worth your time. The best thing to do is to plant a cross seed, if you want the biggest pumpkin at any weigh-off. But look at the 1556 Rodonis. It was grown from the 1450 Wallace which is a 1068 Wallace x sib. The 1450 Wallace has grown five pumpkins over 1,200 Lbs.
Now let’s take the 723 and 845 Bobier. Everyone knows that these two seeds have played a big impact with pumpkins we see today going over 1,500Lbs. There are some 723 and 845 Bobier’s that have been sib. I got a seed from a grower who got some seeds from a Mr. Leonovich, who grew an 1135 in 2004. This was grown from the 1,100 Bobier. Which is an 845 x sib.
Do you think more growers will be growing more sib seeds? Do you feel that it’s worth the effort to grow like the 1,100 Bobier (845 x sib) to see were it might go because there isn’t many 845 Bobier’s left? The 723 Bobier x sib as well?

I have a 738 Glasier 2003 seed (845 Bobier X 723 Bobier) it must be a good seed.

Sibbed seeds have never been looked down on in the same light as selfed seeds.

But to answer your question - If you're looking for those genetics, and to get a big one as well, you're not going to be harming your goals by putting a sibbed 723 or 845 in.

I'd like to expand this a bit
The 723 Bobier and the 845 Bobier are both from the 935 Lloyd
The 935 Lloyd is a 875 Lloyd X 909.5 Lloyd
Now the 909.5 Lloyd and the 875 Lloyd are both the same cross which is a 687 Lloyd x self
I know the 875 and 909.6 are not sibs, but they are almost, and they are both off a selfed seed.
George Lloyd had this figured out many years ago, and I for one believe that sibs or selfed can produce right up there with the best of them, they just need to see dirt.

If you grew and crossed 1230 x 1016 Daletas, would that be a sib??? Peace, Wayne

When a seed grows a near world record pumpkin and it is crossed with the seed that grows the world record pumpkin people will grow it even if it is a sib cross. 1450 Wallace

It all depends on WHO makes a sib.

a sib is two different plants of the same seed. Like two 845 Bobiers planted and you take the male from one plant to pollinate the other.

But isn't it true that the cross you make only effects the seed of the pumpkin you grow from that plant but has no effect on size/shape/color of the pumpkin itself?

Amen Steve...
It's all in the name...
...'cause after all, this is obviously the most scientific method of seed selection.
Remember, genetics is just a crap-shoot(he says cynically), LOL, BF

yeah, it has to show-up somewhere, and since the SEEDS in the pumpkin in question are the only things that CAN exhibit NEW characteristics right off the bat, then THEY are the things that do just that. they are the
'early warning' indicators that a new cross has been made.

i just think when you talk sibbed vs selfed that the sibbed cross will combine two sets of genes even though its the same seed stock --- because we all know each seed from a pumpkin can produce a different shape, etc ?
i dont think you can get that with a selfed cross

please excuse my ignorance. I thought the 845 and 723 was 935 Lloyd X 865 Mettler. Thanks
