Is it o'k to share seeds with people. I have been asked and have asked people for seeds. Thanks for there generosity I have many seeds that I will probably never use, anyway I just sent some seeds out to somebody who asked me for seeds. These seeds were'nt grown by me but they were the seeds that growers sent to me. I just don't want to insult anybody by giving away there seeds, I could'nt resist sharing the generosity, it sure made me feel like I did a good deed for my fellow pumpkin grower. Thanks

Why ask now, You already did it? Feeling Guilty? Or do you just feel the need to ask another question...

If you weren't going to plant them and gave them to someone who might, I see that as a good thing.

I look at it this way Richard: If I and another grower do an even swap with no conditions attached, those seeds are mine to do as I wish. If I purchase those seeds, either through an auction or personal deal, the same applies. If I request seeds from a grower and send a bubble, then I am obligated to grow or keep those seeds. If I do not grow those seeds and wish to trade them, then I am obligated to seek the permission of the grower who sent them to do so. Many growers wish to track their seeds. To ask for seeds for the purpose of trading them without the grower's permission is, IMHO, irreprehensible.
I like to be generous as well, but not at the expense of the seed's grower.

when people saw my pictures and my pumpkin last year, I have had about 15 people express intrest in seeds. Now My 700 lb pumpkin ended up in florida. The gentlemen was to send seeds back-naught. I had another pumpkin that was reverse cross of the same plants. I have sent all except about 20 seeds out to growers i get seeds from. I have sent 2 shipments to 2 associations.
I guess my point is I find this a very challenging and stress releasing hobby. I have given about half the seeds out people ask me for. These are folks who garden, but never grew pumpkins. They all get this wonderful site to learn from.
Yes I have gotten may seeds over the years, But I have a limited area to grow. So instead of those not seeing dirt, why not share this disorder to others. Note it is a wonderfull disorder.

No not guilty, maybe like a betrayer, The seeds I gave had two or more to the little brown envelope, so I shared them, I still have the ones I was given, also ones I did pass along were'nt grown by the grower.

I actually have'nt done it, yet (sent out the envelope). I have asked the people who have given me seeds at my request if it would be alright to give away one of there seeds, I won't send it out tell I get the o'k. I posted the message to get a few opinions about it, touchy subject. Just trying to help out a fellow pumkin grower.

its an honorable thing you did asking for permission.
most growers who donate seed to another grower or for auction and/or club seed swaps and promos, realize that some end up being retraded or given to friends.
i have no problem with that. its the seed whores who ask for a certain hot seed you have only to use it for trade bait to get another seed that kinda urks me

I just sent most of them out must of been 25, I'm a 2nd year grower so I don't have any of my own. That is why I took my email address off here, I have had alot of request for seeds, 10 or so, not that I don't mind request, I just don't have any. I was able to send one person seeds.

Richard.........im confused, how can you send out seeds if you grew a 150 pounder and someone stole it. What is this world coming to? I would take my email off here too if i was getting requests and didnt have any pumpkins. Sorry about all the bad luck...........hang in there, it gets better. Yes this is a very tough sport and now you know why they say the hard part is getting it to the scales. Who would have thought keeping it in your possesion would be an issue? I am in burnsville often..........maybe i could get a patch tour this year.

Well half were from a christmas tree contest I won, the other ones were from seeds that people gave me, not the ones the grower grew put thru in the bag, I did send out a few seeds that were grown by the grower, but, I first asked the grower if it would be alright, also the seeds from the grower I did give away were given to me in 2's (two of the same) so I shared them. I have a pumpkin patch in lakeville, at my fathers, small,,someday I will have a house with a pumpkin patch, then maybe you can have a tour.

I use to swap and trade more seeds back in the late 90s than anybody and never got a one complaint. I did this hoping for a wide range of potential record breaking seeds that could be proven in years to come. I have never had a real huge pumpkin but always had the hot seeds when they got proven out. Today I send out my seeds and hope for others in return. I have not made a seed trade in over 3 years. If I end up with a lot of valuable seeds I will not get a chance to try then I donate them to our club or to charity for auction such as the Jeff Glover auction that I donated a lot of my good seeds to. As for my seeds I sent out to others you can do whatever you want with them I could care less where they end up. If you have wishes as to how your seeds are used you should make it very clear to whoever is getting them because to get mad at someone after they trade or give away your seeds that is not fair.
