I'm a 2nd year grower. Set a goal, 500 pounds for me. Don't over water the seedling. Use a thermometer if you use a heating pad. Don't go crazy on the fertilizer. A ice cream container works great for seed starting,,hmm, what kind of flavor.

You need a mentor in your area so that you can email, call or visit as much as you need to in order to further your knowledge.
Maybe Safehouse Orange and you could become pumpkin buddies? Get his email and start bombarding him with everything that comes to mind.....he'd love to help.

No mentor needed, I was just hoping to hear some good advice that other people have heard.

Richard Actually, any and most all information is on this site, Go through each thread, read it, make notes on the stuff you find interesting. Everybody needs a mentor, mine happens to be BP Eddy

Without my mentors (Jake, Craig, Dave, Brooks, Eddy and many others) I'd be lost.
Great advice from Eddy again....everyone needs a mentor or two.

it would be an awfull dull season without friends. kinda like the sound of one hand clapping - lol or attending a one pumpkin weigh-off and declaring yourself the champion.

Hey North Shore.... Why would you think I have any clue how to grow these things? I spend all my time on the computer making it almost impossible to get outside where I guess you are supposed to plant these things?? By the way, Is a PH of 8.5 good? lol

Joe Jutras and Docgipe told me to go slow and steady all season. Fish and seaweed more often but in small amounts. Mentors help you prevent doing stupid things (which can be another post). Ask for seeds, get the patch tested, test again after adding and read the newsletters for tips.

I remember back in 2004 when I had my Biggest pumpkin growing off the 1097 Beachy (grew my 845 Bosworth). I had a big hole right by the stem end that never breached the cavity and was a nats hair away from hanging it up for that pumpkin. Tom Beachy emailed me and told me to get a paint brush, and brush Deconil on the split and then put a fan on it. It ended up dring everything up and gained another 350 lbs. That was the first time I have ever heard of using Deconil straight from the bottle using a paint brush, since that day I use that technique every time I have that kind of problem and it works like a charm.

Brooks I used that advice from you last year and it worked wonders. I never enter the patch without a bottle of Daconil and a paintbrush by my side. Even if I cant get a fan on it the sratight up Daconil still works great.Good Advice it does work like a charm.
