This is really interesting, nitrogen increases transpiration in wet soils but decreases it in dry soil:

I've always wondered why neglected low nitrogen plants can have excellent heat tolerance. The graph showz why its hard to heat stress a low nitrogen plant.

If you have soggy soil and cool or humid weather, then dump on the nitrogen. But, cut out the nitrogen once you're in dry summer weather.

Thats what the graph says!!

Somehow I think this must relate to the switch between veg mode and fruit mode. The plant can switch its mineral uptake by switching its transpiration rate. The nitrogen is a trigger to go from veg mode to fruit mode? Aborts can happen when the plant decides it wants to switch from fruit mode back to veg mode? At least in my climate/soil there seen3s to be such a mechanism.
