It might be possible to grow a big pumpkin near the base of the plant off a secondary or tertiary. Ps you can get small vines to behave more like mains by tying them up in the air. Well, if the plant wants to do a spider pattern then maybe just go with it, sometimes fighting with the plant is a losing battle.

I grew a 600 pounder on a first secondary and another one about 15 feet out .I always thought about trying to grow a pumpkin only on a first secondary.I think those first secondarys get so aggressive if you let them.lol
