I am growing 2 seeds of pumpkins. The first, and more concerning, is a 980.5 Vincent. It has not shown any signs of germination. I don't know if this is because it is old (2012) or because of some other problem. I did file lightly, and soak for 1 hour. The other seed, is a 1608 Bryson. It is less worrisome, but still concerning. It had a root about 2 inches long on Wednesday, but when I looked again today, it had a root only about 1 inch long. The root also looks thicker, so I thought that there might be a root problem, that caused it to regrow a new root. Also, at what point is it time to start a new seed due to lack of germination?

Any help will be appreciated.

Give it a little squeeze and sniff it real good...if you detect an odor, no bueno...

with me not knowing how you are doing it, if you can see the root's length do you have them out in the open where the roots can evaporate? always have anything covered with at least a ZipLoc bag/anything to prevent drying out the roots/seeds, etc.
depending on how many 'gotta grow this one' seeds you have, it is ok to have another one or more maybe 3 days behind any other seed(s) so you are not in a watch-and-wait-and-worry situation; most of my best pumpkins have ever been from my own seeds, my backups, lol---good luck--eg

Pumpkinpal2, I have them in soil, but removed them to check the roots for germination, and I can not help the worrying. Also, Porkchop, by "no bueno" do you mean no problem? Also I have only planted the two, because that is all the seeds I have. If necessary, I could plant another of each.

Don't use maple syrup. I saw that and thought 'oh no'. No bueno to use anything but water some folks soak in seaweed... but generally sugars or fertilizer can help rot seeds.

I have found that dilute h202 can delay rot and keep the seed clean a bit longer bleach could help in theory too. New seed from 2019 germ faster and will be hard to kill. The older seeds are do behave as though they are old. Slower and less vigorous. (Getting there myself.)

i've often seen dilution of H2O2 as a practice when soaking seeds, but, think of it - if you can put it on a cut on your finger, it's not gonna hurt a seed - at least, i've never had any seeds that for sure didn't sprout because of the 3% H2O2 - please experiment with it, but a shorter soak time (15 mins., perhaps) could be in order and H2O2 turns into H2O shortly as well, so, no need to rinse; in the SINK, put two shot glasses together with H2O2 in the bottom one and the seeds in it as well - tilt the upper shot glass (or any small glass X 2) far enough to release any air bubbles for maximum submersion;
awww, jeez, here i go again - well, y'all please take it as a chance to experiment, lol---eg

Thank you G.Kins, i just knew that people soaked seeds. I dont smell bad odors, nor is there any rot, but it ,may be unviable. Also, Porkchop, I am not sure that will work because I live in Canada, and I don't believe the borders are still open. Thank you for help, I just wanted to know of I should worry. My 1608, has almost completely started now. The leaves have just emerged from the casing, but the 980 seemed a bit dry, so I will water it and see if it sprouts, I will update you with anything new. Thanks

Read your diary and your post where you said it seemed dry. Are you starting it in soil or baggie method ? can't dry out or be too wet and how is the heat 24/7?

It is in soil, in a fibre pot. However, the fibre pot was drying out. I watered it and it has good moisture now. I have it on top of a heat mat 24/7, but I don't know the exact temperature.
